This Tyne foy boat Joan was probably built by the South Shields boatbuilders Mitchelson’s in the 1920s.
Foy boats were privately owned by foyboat men who plied the Tyne and contracted to provide services for ships on the river by assisting with mooring, transporting crew and supplies (especially to ships at anchor).

This vessel is a 16 foot salmon fishing boat that was donated to the Trust by Mrs Susan Mackiver, having been used by her late husband Robert for fishing off Whitburn beach, just south of South Shields.
